Ernie Ballz: Pick Up the Damn Phone…
Posted on June 20, 2012 by "The Rockshow" Ernie Ballz
I started wrestling in 2002, and that was still kind of the beginning of being booked through email even. There was no Facebook or even really Myspace until a few years later. Half the time, I actually had the promoter pick up the phone and actually call me with dates or tell me that I was booked for the next show when I got paid from the last one. God forbid, a promoter actually has to call someone to make sure that they are good for their bookings. I miss these days, because I feel that the business was better at that time.
I have gone on record as saying that I feel that social media in general is fucking up America. Kids today have massive social issues, because they have absolutely no clue how to interact with people other than online. Now, I feel like wrestling promoters think that it is “easier” to book a guy through Facebook, for whatever reason. In my opinion, it is much easier, and quicker to just pick up the damn phone and call the guy. Whether you get their voicemail or you actually get them, it is much easier to contact them directly than through some bullshit website.
I don’t know if it is laziness or just plain stupidity, but it seems to me that if you want to make sure your talent is good to go for a show, you would want to contact them directly rather than hope they received some message through Facebook. Call the guy. It takes fucking 5 minutes, if that. Then you will know right away whether they are good to go or not, rather than waiting 2 or 3 days to hear back from them.
My biggest bugaboo is when the promoter just expects you to know that you are on the show. I cannot tell you how many times I have gotten then old “oh, I told you at the last show” or “oh, I thought I said something to you.”
A.) Don’t fucking lie to me and say that you told me at the last show. IF you DID tell me, then WE would NOT be having this discussion in the first place, I would be showing up for your show.
B.) Don’t act like you thought you said something when you know you didn’t. I know how the game is played. You are just trying to cover your own ass and not make yourself look like a fucking idiot.
I have said it a thousand times; professional wrestling is called a business for a reason. If you, as the promoter, cannot even contact your talent properly, then how the hell is the rest of your show going to look? It better look fucking amazing in my opinion, because you don’t have time to contact your talent, so you obviously must be spending that time on other things regarding your show. There had better be food and top-notch equipment or something like that, because you must have been busy working on something rather than contacting people. Stop being lazy and just pick up the damn phone and call your talent like a real businessman.
